I owe the success of my educational and eventual accomplishments to the counsel of one person - Dr. Jeremiah Durick. I am a native of Vermont from the Northeast Kingdom (home was St. Johnsbury, but I graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport). My dad was a plumber with an eighth grade education and a successful business man. I wanted to go to college to be a physician. My ticket was a small scholarship to UVM as the highest ranking male student in my high school class of 6 men and 25 women. My dad was now willing to help me, the oldest of five children.. But, I was flunking out, especially in chemistry. Dr. Durick was the Director of Summer Session at SMC. I was referred to him and I believe he saw my dream was sincere and so at his recommendation, I took both semesters of General Chemistry with Labs taught by a great teacher, Dr. Lemire - who also died young. I earned two B's. Then the great SMC teachers, including English with Durick and biochem with Dr. John Hartnett and ethics with Fr. Hamel, led to admission to UVM Medical School. But two years into medicine, I was denied further study. I was married, had our first child (now a physician),and depressed beyond words. I was desperate and really hurting, so I went back to this non-scientist mentor whom I trusted. Dr. Durick led me to consider and visit his alma mater for the Ph.D., the University of Ottawa. I earned my Ph.D. in the Summer of 1960. The same year, he died and  I never had a chance to thank him...The rest of my career is history. Today, I am a teacher of physicians, as well as others, on an international scale!" (PAL)
